We know the Niagara Region isn’t perceived to be a job-filled place to live, but it’s important to enjoy where you live. And a big part of that is enjoying what you do on a day to day basis. We know long term job searching can be discouraging, but staying optimistic and determined will help you remain the confident job candidate you are! We’ve come up with some tips through the word MOTIVATE to help you stay motivated through your job hunt:

M

Meditate. Allow yourself to dream about the person you wish to be as a professional. Taking time to care for your mental and emotional needs helps you to remain motivated in your job search because it provides perspective and focus. Gotta keep your head in the game!

O

Opportunity knocks. Be prepared and alert. There are more jobs out there than the public knows about (trust us, we see this being behind the scenes), so keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities. Don’t be afraid to try things you may not have considered in the past. Keeping an open mind allows you to take advantage of opportunities.

T

Talk about it. Let your interests and goals be known. Whether it’s discussing with a friend, a store clerk, or an employment counsellor here at the Job Gym, let the world know your ambitions.

I

Invigorate your resume. Freshen up your documents. Perhaps you could switch things up and put a fancy border on your resume. And use buzz words (we’ll be blogging about this soon, stay tuned!). Put as much effort into tailoring your resume as you would getting ready for a date.

V

Value your uniqueness. You are someone’s perfect job candidate. There’s a job out there that fits your interests and skill set like a puzzle piece, it’s only a matter of not losing hope. Keep your eyes on the prize!

A

Acquire new skills. There’s no time like the present to add something new to your smorgasbord. Expand your skills set by attending some of our workshops and seminars (see Workshops blog) can help restore lost motivation. Drop by the Job Gym to register.

T

Toot your own horn. You need to self-advocate and be your own agent. Motivation form others will take you far, but self-motivation that will take you farther. Don’t be afraid to talk yourself up. Employers want to know who you are and what you’re capable of.

E

Eliminate negativity. When you surround yourself with like-minded people, you will thrive in that realm. People who strive to be successful surround themselves with successful, positive people. When you clear away negative thoughts, you may find the job search barriers to be less difficult to overcome.
