Seasonal Child Care/Day Camp Program Support Staff (Contract)
The YMCA is seeking post-secondary students looking to gain valuable
experience working with children in a variety of settings.
Positions available in: St.Catharines, Grimsby, Beamsville, Welland, Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Port Colborne
Start Date: May 4, 2020
End Date: September 4, 2020
Hours: Minimum of 12 hours weekly in Child Care during month of May.
12-24 hours weekly in Child Care and Camp training during month of June.
Full time hours in Camp during month of July & August (35-40 weekly).
Wage: $17.21 – $19.06 per hour for any Child Care hours (May to June)
$13.15 – $14.00 per hour for any Program Support hours (June to August)
YMCA Membership for duration of contract.
Seasonal Child Care Staff positions are available Monday to Friday before and/or after school in YMCA School age Child Care Centres until end of the school year.
Program Support Staff are responsible for working 1:1 with a variety of campers with developmental and behavioural special needs. Staff are responsible for providing a safe and quality camp environment for their camper. Staff will work towards inclusion and integrating campers and to provide developmentally appropriate program within the camp program. Camp runs Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, with extended care from 7:30am to 6pm. The majority of camp staff are scheduled to work between 7.5 and 8.5 hours per day.
Qualifications:
- Enrollment in Early Childhood Education program or other post-secondary child-related education (Educational Assistant, Child and Youth, Recreation Therapy, etc.)
- Experience working with children and/or youth
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older
- Values driven individuals who make excellent role models for children and youth
- Experience working in day or residential camp is an asset
- Energy, enthusiasm and flexibility
- The ability to participate in physical activity (including swimming), and work in an outdoor environment in various weather conditions
- Strong communication skills
- Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C (within two years of certification date)
- A clear and satisfactory criminal reference check inclusive of the vulnerable sector search (CRC VSS) issued for the YMCA of Niagara
- Access to reliable transportation to travel between program locations
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure YMCA Child Care and Day Camp is an inclusive experience and provide strategies to achieve this goal
- Plan and deliver programs and activities for Child Care and Day Camp participants following YMCA objectives
- Support participants with behavioural, physical, or developmental challenges
- Assist with program implementation and adaptation of activities to meet the needs of all campers in the group
- Maintain a positive and professional relationship with all parents, children and fellow team members
- Provide feedback to parents regarding their children
- Responsible for the physical condition of child care facility
- Read, understand and apply information from camper profile
- Make quick decisions to ensure maximum participant integration and safety
- Understand and commit to confidentiality
- Support and work as part of a staff/volunteer team by remaining flexible (willing to learn new skills, alter skills)
- Responsible for the safety and security of staff and participants
- Respond to first aid and emergency situations as required and check for the potential health and safety hazards at all times when on duty and complete incident reports when necessary
- Follow CPI Non-violent Crisis Intervention guidelines (once certified)
- Attend all relevant meetings and trainings, including training on YMCA Child Protection Policies & Procedures
