Full-Time Shelter Support Worker (4 Positions)

Job Description

We are seeking four individuals to act as Shelter Support Workers for the Out of the Heat Community Shelter and Service Hub from July 1, 2019 to August 31, 2019. Employees will be expected to work five 7-hr shifts over each of 8 weeks during our operating season. Out of the Heat is a community-run initiative offering a safe place to sleep and after-hours access to services during the warmest months for homeless members of our community.

The successful candidates will primarily support and/or run front line shelter shifts, as well as assist with administrative tasks involved in running the emergency shelter. Responsibilities will include managing the overall safety and security of the clients and facility, serving food, cleaning up, gathering statistics, and other duties as required.

This position will be of interest to post-secondary students whose studies fall into any of the following areas: Social Work, Policing, Nursing, Mental Health, Addictions, Developmental Services, Psychology.

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work in emotionally charged environment at times characterized by high stress.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a large and diversified workload with rapidly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability in community and conflict management.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Evidence of effective organizational, interpersonal, communication, judgment and decision making skills.
  • Flexible, self-directed and able to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Consistent and regular attendance required.
  • Demonstrated experience and skill in working with marginalized populations
  • Must have an excellent knowledge of spoken and written English; Bilingualism would be an asset.
  • The incumbent will be required to work a variety of shifts, primarily overnights.

Verification of vulnerable sector check (PVSC) as well as three references will be requested at time of interview.

 

The following certifications are not necessary but will be considered assets: First Aid/ CPR, NVCI/PMAB, CPI, Safe Food Handling. Three days of training will be required prior to commencing employment 01 July.

 

This position is funded through Canada Summer Jobs and the incumbent will need to present proof that they meet all CSJ eligibility requirements when presented with offer of employment.
