Contract Director
Job Description
We are looking for a Director to start in early September 2023 or as soon as possible following your hire date. This is a 1 year contract position, job class of level 2, with hours work work being 40 hours per week, evenings, weekends and special event work as required
Supervision: The successful candidate will be employed by the Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre Incorporated, responsible to the policies and directions determined by the Board of Directors and under the daily supervision of the Executive Director.
Primary Objective
- To assist in the successful management of the Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre Inc. The Director is an active presence within the organization and assists the Executive Director (ED) with the organizational requirements. Employed by the Fort Erie Native Centre the Director is under the direct supervision of the Executive Director.
Leadership and Relationships
- Collaborates with Management Team to create positive and productive workplace and community relationships
- Strong communication skills; ability to communicate accurately and effectively

- Strategic and analytical thinking; collaborates with other Friendship Centers, stakeholders, and multiple levels of government
- Collaborates with Executive Director in implementation of organizational goals, service delivery to community, and uphold organizational values
- Assists with the planning and execution of Board Meetings, functions, meetings, and speaking engagements
- Assist the Executive Director in accomplishing organizational priorities and addressing emerging Friendship Centre issues
- Other duties as assigned from time to time by the Executive Director
Operations and Facilities Management
- Collaborate with Management Team. Organize and report to ED on day-to-day operations
- Evaluate and report on program adherence to funding requirements, mission, vision, values of programs and services at the Friendship Centre
- Assist in Board of Director (BOD) Agenda for meetings
- Adhere to all policies and procedures of the organization including recommending necessary changes based on changing legislation and assist in the drafting of these changes once approved by the Executive Director
- Maintain strict confidentiality for the organization including employees, students, placements, and volunteers
- Assist Executive Director in completing organizational reports for funders, Board of Directors and organizational reviews.
Mission Outreach and Community Relations
- Assists the Executive Director in implementation of organizational goals, service delivery to community, and upholds the Friendship Centre’s vision, mission, values, and organizational values
- Increase community awareness of Friendship Centre programs and services and maintain strategic partnerships and relationships using social media platforms
- Participate in Community Events of the Friendship Centre and other broader community events to promote the Friendship Centre
- Under the direction of the Executive Director, act as a representative for the Friendship Centre
- Other Duties as assigned from time to time by the Executive Director
Human Resource Management
- Assists in creating a supportive and safe working climate for all employees and volunteers
- Follows provincial and federal laws and regulations including organizational policies and procedures
- Acts as a management representative on the Health and Safety Committee
- Assist in New Hire orientation as needed
- Other Duties as assigned from time to time by the Executive Director
Financial Administration
- Assist the Executive Director in preparation of a comprehensive annual budget for approval by the Board of Directors.
- Assist the Executive Director as directed to ensure that proper regulations and procedures are adhered to financially.
- Assist Executive Director in the monitoring of the organization’s funds and cash flow.
- Other Duties as assigned from time to time by the Executive Director
Position Requirements (HARD SKILLS)
Education and Certifications
- College Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.
Knowledge and Experience
- Continuously increasing knowledge of Indigenous Culture, languages and norms including and specifically the needs of Urban Indigenous people
- Knowledge of Ontario Not-for-profit governance, Bylaws, public policy, and relevant legislation
- Willingness to learn effective Human Resource strategies in managing staff.
- Experience in collaborative decision-making models and means of Organizational Management
- Strong financial understanding including budgeting and financial forecasting
- Excellent and accurate administrative abilities
- Other Duties as assigned from time to time by the Executive Director

- Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks at once including setting priorities, develop a personal schedule, record goals, and track progress
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including positive communication, motivational speaking, flexible problem solving
- Strong comprehension skills including reading and understanding information Strong interpersonal skills, including an ability and motivation to work and interact with a variety of people; experience and success in motivating and managing from a positive, solutions-based approach
- Problem solver/critical thinking. Able to assess issues and identify their causes, generate solutions, and make recommendations/decisions when appropriate
- Ability to demonstrate the Friendship Centre Values at work and outside of work
- Leadership skills, able to positively influence others, setting aside negative or harmful opinions, concerns and beliefs to meet and exceed goals that are in the best interests of the organization and the community
- Flexible hours as needed. Able to work irregular hours and some weekends when required.
- Travel required as needed
