JOB POSTING: Environmental Education Program Assistant

Position type: Full time, 35 hours per week

Location: Hamilton, Ontario with flexible work from home

Start date: May 6 or sooner

 

About Green Venture:

We are an established and impactful non-profit environmental organization that works to empower Hamiltonians to implement greener practices in their homes and communities to make our city a climate champion. We operate out of EcoHouse – a 1850s farmhouse in east Hamilton with 2 acres of gardens, and sustainable living demonstrations.

 

Our team is focused on making positive environmental action happen every day and we use creativity, practical tools, and demonstrating environmental action to engage our community to achieve our mission. We are building our team to support two key strategic objectives: to work with Hamilton youth to drive climate action, and to help Hamiltonians make their day to day lives greener. 

 

About the Position:

The Environmental Education Assistant will design and deliver environmental education programming to children from kindergarten to Grade 12, including creating Community Science projects for students across Hamilton to participate in, with the goal of engaging youth in climate change adaptation and mitigation. Possible areas of focus include urban forestry/tree health, invasive species, water quality, and green infrastructure.

The successful candidate will be an experienced community educator to develop and deliver environmental education outreach programming, an engaging and creative communicator with a passion for empowering community and youth environmental action, and a collaborative and flexible team-player.

 

We are looking for a candidate that meets most of the following qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education and/or professional experience in the fields of science and/or education.
  • A working knowledge of current environmental issues, particularly as they relate to climate change.
  • A deep interest in environmental protection.
  • Enthusiastic and creative self-starter, with demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience delivering education programs, community presentations, and/or workshops to children or adults.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Google Suite, social media content creation and management, digital communication tools and strategies, and design software (e.g. WordPress, MailChimp, Photoshop, Canva) and in mobile data collection technology.
  • Experience working with diverse groups and building community.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing situations.
  • Class G driver’s license and clean driving record and access to a vehicle, or alternative way to get around the city.
  • Valid Emergency First Aid + CPR certification an asset.
  • Must be able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check upon acceptance of the position.

Eligibility requirements: 

These positions may be funded through Federal youth employment programs with the following requirements of applicants:

  • Between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of the intervention; 
  • Be Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents, or Protected Persons as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; 
  • Not currently be in school;
  • Self identifies as Indigenous, youth living with a disability, or a woman, or a racialized youth or a  youth who are living in a Northern or Remote community; 
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada; and 
  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations

    

Terms of Employment:

  • Full-time, 11-month contract, with possibility of extension pending funding.
  • Salary starting at $37,800.
  • 35 hours per week, with occasional evening and weekend work required. 
  • Primarily work from home but the successful candidate will be required to attend our EcoHouse office in Stoney Creek and community events onsite in Hamilton approximately 1-3 days/week (occasionally 5 days) and some evenings and weekends.
