Job Description

Niagara Regional Broadband Network (NRBN) is the Region’s leading service provider of high-performance data, voice, and networking solutions. In this exciting new role, you will support NRBN by ) working in collaboration with the FTTH and Field Operations teams, as well as contractors, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure quality and budgetary requirements are met. The Inspector is responsible for working in compliance with all health and safety legislation, regulations, company policies and procedures, as well as in adherence to NRBN’s standards pertaining to quality of work and best practices.

What Do you Bring to the Team?

  • A post-secondary education in Engineering, C.E.T., or equivalent (Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic/experience requirements)
  • 2-3 years of construction/design experience in outside plant fibre, FTTH, electrical or communication distribution systems
  • 2-3 years of supervisory and/or training experience
  • Proficiency with current systems including (but not limited to) Microsoft Office Suite and Visio
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with customers, colleagues, and Management
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly and effectively analyze and remedy issues that may arise in a timely and efficient manner
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to shift and adjust priorities and direct activities toward timely completion of assigned tasks
  • Adaptability to adjust to changes in processes, systems, and administrative structures to meet organizational and departmental requirements
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment
  • Conflict resolution skills to manage escalating situations competently, displaying empathy, integrity, and professional conduct

What Will You be Doing?

  • Working with various teams and departments to achieve optimum customer service, profitability, and cost-effectiveness
  • Managing contractor, vendor, and/or customer inquiries and resolve issues in coordination with relevant departments
  • Coordinating and managing resource needs to meet the set goals
  • Performing all work in accordance with the provisions of the Canada Labour Code and Regulations, as well as all legislative, corporate, and departmental policies and procedures
  • Supervising, inspecting, and assisting with on-site routine services including installation, maintenance, and repair
  • Analyzing and interpreting all specifications as per agreements, and monitor all deviations for same to ensure compliance to all procedures
  • Performing field inspections to evaluate the work performed and materials used; verifying the quality of workmanship, materials used, and compliance with plans, specifications, and estimates
  • Documenting deficiencies and deviations from plans and refer serious problems and feedback to FTTH team members and Construction Coordinators
  • Overseeing activities of various contractors and establishing, implementing, and maintaining procedures to ensure quality and completion to specifications, in collaboration with the FTTH team members and Construction Coordinators
  • Performing regular site visits to active construction site(s) to ensure that all work is conducted in accordance with NRBN standards and applicable safety legislation
  • Assisting contractors in problem solving to ensure deadline and budgetary adherence
  • Reporting on job progression, as well as budgetary and timeline adherence to all relevant parties
  • Attending site meetings with contractors, engineers, and homeowners as required
  • Assisting in the development of processes, procedures, and workflows for the business unit
  • Assisting with the implementation strategies and develop best practices for NRBN and FTTH deployments
  • Maintaining professional relationships with contractors in accordance with NRBN’s business practices
  • Reviewing and/or verifying project-specific contractor invoicing and overages
  • Working in accordance with, and adhering to, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, RSO 1990, WHMIS, 2015 and all relevant legislation

Working Conditions

  • Indoor/outdoor office and jobsite environment with regular local vehicle travel (daily)
  • Often required to lift up to 70lbs (approx. 32kg), as well as operate hand and power tools and test equipment
  • Periodically work at heights or on ladders
  • Rotational shift hours will be required to ensure proper support coverage for NRBN customers during evenings and weekends
  • Work in varying weather conditions to ensure that outages are responded to as required
  • Required to work “On Call” on a rotating schedule

 

Special Conditions

This position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate (‘PCRC’ or ‘CRC’).

This position requires the incumbent to obtain and produce a clear Drivers Abstract

Must possess an Ontario Class ‘G’ Driver’s License in good standing at all times with eligibility to drive NRBN-owned vehicles
