Overview of the Position

As a key member of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, the Manager, Sport is responsible for leading the delivery of Sport Operations, including the Sport Schedule, Sport Equipment, Major and Minor Technical Officials, Test Events, Results Management and Medal Ceremonies.  Working closely with the CEO, Canada Games Council, and National Sport Organization (NSO) Technical Representatives, the Manager is a critical liaison with the 18 sports and 17 venues, while providing coordination, integration, development and support to the other core functional areas.

Key Responsibilities

This role will be responsible for, but not limited to:

Sport Competition 

  • Strategic planning, managing and ensuring the delivery of all elements of the sport competition programs in accordance with CGC Standards and NSO Rules and Regulations
  • Leading the timely documentation and collection of key sport competition information
  • Guiding the development of the Detailed Competition and Activity Schedule (DCAS)
  • Managing the development of the sport training and competition schedules (Master Sport Schedule)
  • Leading the planning and operation of the competition Field of Play (FoP), athlete warm-up, and preparation area at the sport venue and designated training venues
  • Contributing to the development of Venue Use Agreements (VUAs)
  • Supporting partnerships with 18+ venues across the 12 municipalities of the Niagara Region
  • Leading the development of the Sport Test Event strategy and its subsequent execution

Sport Operations

  • Leading the effective evolution and delivery of the sport operations and services plans for athletes, coaches, and officials for each sport, integrating within the overall Business Plan
  • Establishing, managing and delivering relevant sport competition milestones, delivery plans, and related reporting in line with the Games-wide project plan
  • Interpreting and disseminating information on the proper application of NSO Sport Technical Packages to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring sport and venue specific standards are understood and upheld cross-functionally at all times
  • Leading the identification process (in conjunction with the NSO representatives and Sport Leads) of the sport and technical equipment required for each sport competition and training venue ensuring the procurement process is delivered in accordance with budgetary requirements, Sport Standards and legacy initiatives
  • Collaborating  with other team members to support the procurement process, ensuring that all sport competition assets are properly secured, stored, maintained and transported
  • Managing service delivery for all Technical Officials across the 18 sports in the Games
  • Supporting the coordination of the Sport Entries, official timing, scoring and results programs, including working with Information Technology (IT) throughout the selection and implementation of timing/scoring/results systems for each sport with particular consideration to their connectivity with GEMS.pro
  • Leading and overseeing the development and delivery of the Main Results Centre and the Results Management policy, plan and sport specific procedures, including program development for results, volunteer training sessions, and required fit-out and technology needs
  • Leading the development of an integrated policy and plan for Medal Ceremonies programs in cohesion with Protocol, Sport Presentation and Spectator Experience, ensuring sport specific requirements are met
  • Collaborating with Broadcast/Webcast on their plans and requirements as they pertain to Sport, specifically the Field of Play and the Master Sport Schedule
  • Coordinating and delivering the required NSO and CGC Technical Conferences (T1/T2) and all other Sport FA briefing sessions prior to the commencement of the sport competition
  • Actively leading and contributing to all infrastructure project developments – including internal and external Request for Proposals (RFPs) – to ensure that appropriate Sport Standards are delivered as required and met on time

Sport Team

  • Assisting with the creation of an effective sport delivery model, including both staff and volunteer components
  • Recruiting and supervising the staff team needed to effectively implement plans
  • Building, guiding and leading volunteer teams, in close collaboration with staff liaisons and Chairs
  • Acting as the primary contact between the Host Society and Sport Chair, Sport Leads, NSO representatives and the CGC, fostering relationships and managing intricacies towards the successful delivery of the Games
  • In partnership with the Sport Chair, developing the framework for the Sport Leads and each SOC to deliver their respective sport competitions
  • Supporting the Sport Leads with the recruitment, training and scheduling of all Sport FA volunteers

Other Responsibilities 

  • Overseeing the development of operational policies and procedures
  • Managing the Sport FA’s operating budget
  • Contributing to the documentation for the Transfer of Knowledge program
  • Being a fully engaged team member with a goal of positive and healthy relationships in the workplace
  • Executing all responsibilities in a manner which is consistent with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games
  • Other duties as reasonably required. Due to the nature of our organization, and especially during the time leading up to, and during the actual Games, all staff will be required to act in capacities beyond their formal job description. These will always be reasonable, however, the expectation is that staff will step up in ways that may not normally be expected of them.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or undergraduate degree  in Sport Management, Business Administration, Recreation, or a related field
  • Five (5) or more years of work experience, or a combination or relevant education and work experience
  • Deep experience working in multi-sport Major Games or other high-pressure, complex sport/event environments with  demonstrated knowledge of volunteer management, policy and procedure development and executing quickly and efficiently
  • Strong working knowledge and experience delivering sport technical requirements and programs in collaboration with sport governing bodies, volunteer leads and internal functions (e.g., Venues)
  • Strong planning, coordination, administrative, organizational, and consensus building skills
  • Experience with Google’s G Suite programs (e.g. Gmail, Docs, Slides, Calendar, etc.) is an asset
  • Strong skills in analyzing, organizing, and communication (oral and written)
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects, and work well under pressure
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, team environment where duties and reporting levels are shared
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a focus on attention to detail and communication of expectations
  • Energetic self-starter; takes initiative and can work with minimum direction and supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly dynamic and deeply collaborative environment, moving seamlessly between many simultaneous and concurrent tasks, operations, and requests
  • Flexible and strong team orientation and management style, i.e., a highly developed ‘collaboration gene’
  • A creative, innovative bent, with an innate ability to see the glass as perpetually half-full, always looking for the opportunity behind the challenge

  • Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset
  • Flexibility to work some evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Valid Ontario drivers license
  • May be subject to a criminal record check and/or other background checks
  • Working conditions: sitting, using a computer, and repetitive motions over extended periods of time
  • Physical demands may include: lifting up to 30 lbs, working outdoors
