POSITION TITLE: Recreation Assistant

RESIDENCE: Grand Canal Retirement Residence

REPORTS TO: Recreation Manager

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:

Under the direction of the Recreation Manager is responsible to assist in the design, implementation and evaluation of recreation programs to enhance the physical, cultural, social, spiritual, intellectual, and emotional well-being of the residents. Contributes to establishing new programs, policies, and procedures that support the programs and operation of the department.

BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education. Must possess a diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in the field of Recreation, Physical Education, and/or Gerontology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in facilitating a variety of programs in a senior’s environment is essential.
  • Must be computer literate and have a valid provincial license or willingness to obtain and be willing to drive the company vehicle.
  • Smart Serve certificate required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to converse both orally and written in English is essential.
  • *Vulnerable Persons Sector Police Check current and acceptable upon application
  • TB Test and Physician Fitness Statement
  • MOL ( Ministry of Labour ) Occupational Health & Safety Certificate Step 4 or 5
  • Health & Safety Certified an asset
  • Valid First Aid & CPR Certificate
  • Safe Food Handler’s Certificate
  • WHMIS Certificate an asset
  • *This position may require weekend commitment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates actively in and contributes to the Continuous Preventive Health program.
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates recreation programs for the residents.
    Promotes resident awareness and participation in leisure and recreation programs (daily activity sheets, posters, TV, etc.)

  • Maintains records for the department including, assessments, evaluation of planned programs, and attendance/participation records.
  • Assists in planning, organizing and developing special events, and outings.
  • Assists with the supervision of volunteers.
  • Assists the Recreation Manager in the planning of the monthly calendar.
  • Requisitions supplies and materials as needed for programs under the direction of the Recreation Manager.
  • Works with family members, volunteer, and community groups to implement activities and programs that enrich the daily lives of the residents.
  • Assists the Recreation Manager in reviewing and maintaining a department policy and procedure manual.
  • Participates in monthly audits and meetings for the recreation department to identify opportunities for improvement and to ensure resident satisfaction.
  • Participates in team conferences as required.
  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems. This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills.
  • Complies with all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
  • Completes all required annual mandatory training/education.
  • Purchases departmental supplies within recreation budget when needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
