SETTLEMENT WORKER IN SCHOOLS (SWIS) PROGRAM – Farsi Speaking – (on your cover letter please list all languages that you can speak fluently)

Rate:  $18.41 – $21.63 per hour plus YMCA membership

Start date: Immediately

Contract, regular part time at lease 20 hr per week, includes days, evenings and weekends

Anticipated end date: March 30, 2022

NOTE: This process will also establish a pool of candidates that may be used to fill similar vacancies (temporary, contract and permanent) within YMCA Employment Services over the next 6 months.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Settlement Worker in Schools Program (SWIS) Settlement Worker will work with designated schools throughout the Niagara Region.

 

Qualifications:

  • University degree or college diploma in social sciences or related field
  • Must be fluent in English (reading, speaking and writing)
  • Must be fluent in Farsi (reading, speaking and writing)
  • At least one year of experience providing settlement counseling
  • Extensive knowledge of community resources
  • Good interpersonal, presentation and organizational skills
  • Must have valid driver’s license and a vehicle.
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR-C certification [within 3 years from date of issue]
  • A clear and satisfactory criminal reference check inclusive of the vulnerable sector search (CRCVSS) issued for the YMCA of Niagara
  • Successful applicants will be required to adhere to the YMCA of Niagara COVID-19 Vaccination Policy

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote healthy school settlement process for both students, their families and their new school community for the District School Board of Niagara and the Niagara Catholic District School Board.
  • Fostering student achievement by providing information and referral services to newly arrived families
  • Provide supports to school staff to create a culturally inclusive environment and build relationships with their new students and their families.
  • Support the school with interpretation services where needed; reception and welcome, orientation, parent teacher interviews, homework clarification and school board policies and procedures.
  • Support school based public health nurse, school assigned Child and Youth Workers, Social Workers and Educational Assistants in providing culturally appropriate services and guiding parents/students through the various processes.
  • Link newcomer families and students to resources and services within the school and within the community
  • Facilitate access to services and resources where there are barriers due to language, gender, age, culture and race.
  • Conduct group sessions to school board faculty, parents, students and community organizations supporting students/families.
  • Represent the YMCA of Niagara in all schools within the Niagara Region.
  • Conduct Case Management sessions with school Principals, ESL staff, classroom teachers, Learning Support Staff/Resource Teachers, Guidance
  • Maintain accurate records of services provided in iCARE (government supported Case management system) and support leadership team in preparing reports.
  • Monitor Administration changes and work with leadership team to arrange for introductions to new Principal(s) and Vice Principal(s).
  • Conduct Needs Assessments for all students and their families accessing services
  • Other duties as required
