Whether you\u2019re an emerging journalist looking to build your portfolio or a retiree eager to stay involved in community life, this flexible and rewarding role is your chance to make an impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Role:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a reporter with the Observer, you\u2019ll be the eyes and ears of the community\u2014capturing stories that matter and keeping readers informed. This is a freelance\/contract position with flexibility, perfect for writers who enjoy variety, meeting new people, and staying connected to local events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What You\u2019ll Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attend and report on community events, public gatherings, and town council meetings (virtual and in-person)<\/li>\n<li>Write clear, compelling, and accurate articles for publication in the Fort Erie Observer and Port Colborne Observer<\/li>\n<li>Conduct interviews with local residents, officials, and event organizers<\/li>\n<li>Take photos to accompany your stories (as needed)<\/li>\n<li>Meet weekly or bi-weekly editorial deadlines<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with the editorial team for content planning and feedback<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What We\u2019re Looking For:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strong writing and research skills<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work independently and manage your own schedule<\/li>\n<li>Comfortable attending events and conducting interviews<\/li>\n<li>Some photography skills are a plus<\/li>\n<li>Basic knowledge of municipal affairs and local politics preferred<\/li>\n<li>Passion for community journalism and storytelling<\/li>\n<li>Strong command of English (written, spoken, listening and comprehension)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Valid driver\u2019s license and access to reliable transportation<\/li>\n<li>(Note: Some assignments can be completed virtually or within walking distance depending on your location.)<\/li>\n<li>Journalism or newspaper experience is an asset but not required<\/li>\n<li>Must be able to meet deadlines and submit clean, publication-ready work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ideal For:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Journalism students<\/li>\n<li>Aspiring writers looking to build a professional portfolio<\/li>\n<li>Retirees or part-time professionals interested in staying engaged with the community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Application Deadline:<\/strong> May 31, 2025<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact:<\/strong> <a href=\"mailto:jenw@forterieobserver.ca\">jenw@forterieobserver.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Please include the job title in the subject line, along with your resume and 1\u20133 samples of your writing (portfolio, school work, or published pieces).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>About Us<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Fort Erie Observer was established in 2019 to connect our community through local photos, stories, news and events.
