Position Summary:
The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, well-balanced meals and snacks for children in our care. This position also includes maintaining a clean, safe, and organized kitchen and completing general housekeeping duties as required.
Type of Work: 4-month contract with potential opportunity for full-time, permanent position beginning January 2027
Wage: $24.55 per hour
Number of Vacancies: One contract position available
Expected Start Date: September 8, 2026
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop weekly menus that meet the recommendations of Canada’s Food Guide and support the nutritional needs of children in care.
• Collaborate with the Administration Team to review and obtain approval for weekly menus.
• Prepare and provide nutritious breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks for all classrooms.
• Deliver meals to each classroom on schedule and ensure food is served at appropriate temperatures.
• Work with classroom staff to confirm daily meal numbers prior to food preparation.
• Prepare appropriate quantities of food based on classroom attendance and meal requirements.
• Maintain accurate daily food production and meal preparation records.
• Place weekly food and supply orders with approved vendors.
• Maintain a clean, sanitary, and well-organized kitchen and food storage areas.
• Regularly inspect food items and ensure products are properly stored and within their expiration dates.
• Wash, sanitize, and properly store all dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment.
• Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, appliances, and equipment throughout the day.
• Complete light housekeeping duties, including mopping floors and cleaning staff washrooms and staff areas, as required.
• Remove garbage and recycling daily and dispose of waste appropriately.
• Receive, organize, and properly store groceries, food deliveries, and non-food supplies.
• Submit kitchen-related expense receipts from pre-prepared food items to the Administration Team as required.
• Understand and uphold the mission, values, and policies of Strive Niagara.
• Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of information relating to children, families, team members, and administration.
• Build positive, respectful relationships and communicate effectively with children, families, colleagues, administration, and the communities we serve.
Qualifications:
• 1-2 years experience preparing and serving nutritious meals and snacks in a child care setting
• Knowledge of Canada’s Food Guide
• Excellent organizational skills with good interpersonal skills
• Current Vulnerable Sector Check
• Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
