13-week program
- 3 weeks of pre-employment workshops (in person) at the St. Catharines John Howard Society of Niagara (JHSoN) office:
– Monday – Friday (9:30 am – 2:30pm) 25 hours per week - 10 weeks at a job placement
– 30 hours per week paid by employer, JHS reimburses employer for amount of hours worked at $16.55 per hour ($17.20 per hour as of October 1 2024) - Participants will receive an hourly wage for all pre-employment sessions ($16.55 per hour -$17.20 as of October 1, 2024) and job placement
- Pre-employment and life skill training is provided to prepare for and maintain job placements
Who is eligible
- Between the ages of 15 and 30
- Not collecting employment insurance (EI)
- Not attending school full time
- Having a difficult time securing employment for various reasons
Also Included
- Transportation to attend in person workshops can be provided for individuals outside of St. Catharines and bus tickets for those in St Catharines
Youth Will
- Complete a work placement at an employer in their community
- Earn money (hourly minimum wage) while gaining valuable life and work experience
- Receive on-going support from employment counsellors throughout the program
- Learn new skills and strategies that will make placement and future employment goals more successful
- Receive certification training in First Aid & CPR, WHMIS, National Safe Food Handling, Smart Serve and more
Goals of the program
- Provide an experiential learning opportunity to develop “hard and soft skills” required to acquire and maintain employment
- Provide effective, youth-focused programming that will provide participants with an enhanced self-esteem designed to improve their long-term employment prospects
- Provide youth with entry level jobs which could lead to a lasting and rewarding career with an employer from all over the Niagara Region
- Focus on keeping the program responsive enough to service specific individual needs as well as support positive group dynamics
- Change anti-social attitudes and behaviours that interfere with their ability to be successful at employment and life
- Assist participants in developing a positive support system
- Improve problem-solving skills, and job search abilities
- Promote positive family, social and community interactions through support and counselling
- Encourage and facilitate family and community resource networking to engage, plan and support the youth in the Niagara community
- Participants to gain employment and/or improved employability skills; and/or return to full or part-time education and/or training
- Provide workshops designed to introduce youth to workplace health and safety practices as well as certifications geared to their employment goals
