Community Outreach and Assistant to the Executive Director Position

 Reports To:  The Executive Director and/or Designate

Job Purpose: Working under the supervision of the Executive Director and/or designate, the Community Outreach and Assistant to the Executive Director provides direct support to the Executive Director in the advancement of the mission of OBIA, its program and services and objectives.

Overview: The Community Outreach and Assistant to the Executive Director plays a key role in the development of new relationships/partnerships, cultivating existing relationships/partners, bringing awareness about the services that OBIA provides and increasing capacity through generation of new funding sources

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. Representative of OBIA
  • At the request of the Executive Director or in her/his absence represent the organization at community events, conferences etc.
  • Serve on committees with external partners as required
  • Work with the Executive Director in the areas of Government Relations and Public Policies and represent OBIA as needed
  • Assists with raising the profile of OBIA through participation in agency and community events

2. Relationship and Partner Building 

  • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, develop and implement a strategy for making the public aware of our services and growing our programs
  • Create new partnerships and foster relationships by outreach, networking and giving presentations to diverse groups such as:
    • Health Care Providers including but not limited to: Hospitals, outpatient services, service providers, social workers, case managers, community outreach programs
    • Other organizations where the primary services is not brain injury e.g. mental health agencies, long term care facilities, police services, substance abuse programs, children’s aid societies, women’s shelters, legal aid, ODSP, Ontario Works
  • Market OBIA’s programs including training, peer support and support services
  • Collaborate with partnering community agencies/groups to identify the training needs pertaining to brain injury

3. Organizational and Administrative Responsibilities

  • In consultation with the Executive Director, draft contracts with various stakeholders including local brain injury associations, community partners, etc.
  • Assist the Executive Director and/or designate in project coordination for various projects including, but not limited to e-learning platforms and development of new website etc.
  • On behalf of OBIA or the Executive Director draft/write letters of support
  • Other administrative duties as required

4. Grant Writing and Fund Development

  • Research opportunities for funding through foundations and corporations where there is a right sectoral fit
  • Reach out to funders to discuss potential funding opportunities
  • Prepare written proposals for grants, foundations and other institutional and major gift donors
  • In collaboration with other members of the team develop a robust stewardship program to keep our partners and donors informed of our activities, thank them for their support, and invite them to future engagement

5. Engagement with Affiliated Brain Injury Community Associations (CA)

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with local community brain injury associations (including attending special events)
  • Provide information and consultation to community associations to ensure understanding of affiliation with OBIA (rights and responsibilities), shared activity agreements, brain injury awareness month etc.
  • Share information with CAs regarding relevant changes in legislation and social trends
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and Co-Chairs of the OBIA Advisory Council (OAC) assist with the growth and development of the (OAC)
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and other members of the team, coordinate provincial activities for June – Brain Injury Awareness Month

6. Other

  • Assume such other duties as required

Qualifications:

Education

  • University Degree or equivalent comprehensive work experience in the not for profit sector

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to diverse groups
  • Ability to engage effectively in community outreach and networking
  • Knowledge of brain injury and or /mental health and other disabilities is an asset
  • Experience with public speaking and giving presentations
  • Self-motivated and excellent time management and organizational skills to meet deadline
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team setting
  • Fund development in not for profit sector is an asset
  • Ability to work some evenings and occasional weekends
  • Availability for Provincial travel and a valid driver’s license
