Seasonal Conversion Crew Member

Job Description

Position Summary

As a member of the Operations Department, the Conversion Crew Member is responsible for converting the facility to/from hockey and event modes. Events can include concerts, banquets, basketball games, etc. Preparation and setup required for hockey and events are included in the Conversion process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Following detailed instructions from supervisors, the Conversion Crew Member must always conduct themselves in a manner that upholds health and safety regulations, ensuring events will run as safely and efficiently as possible

Prepare the facility event level for Hockey Games and Ice Rentals. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Installing fibreglass flooring deck and rink boards (first removing materials from previous event set-up)
  • Installing hockey glass, hockey mesh, and glass clips
  • The placement of stanchions where required
  • The installation of any required electrical equipment

Prepare the facility event level for Basketball Games. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Installing basketball court decking (first removing materials from previous event set-up)
  • Ensuring correct placement and installation of basketball nets, including required electrical cables
  • Building Club Bar stage and placing required equipment on stage once prepared
  • Setting up folding chairs where required, for example: at courtside, on stage, etc.

Prepare the facility event level for Concerts, etc. This includes, but is not limited to

  • Building the concert stage with required staging equipment (stage legs and decking, stair cases, etc.)
  • Setting up necessary barricades and barriers as determined by promoter
  • Placing folding chairs on event floor, as per drawing specifications

Prepare the event level as determined by concert/event requirements: house curtains, rink boards, pipe and draping, hospitality room, guest and dressing rooms, bike racks, etc.

  • Assist with special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

While any experience as a general labourer, construction labourer, or stagehand/concert labourer is considered an asset,
the Conversion Crew Member must possess the following:

  • An ability to take and follow written and/or verbal direction;
  • Working from heights training is an asset;
  • An ability to work well in a team environment, as well as independently with minimal supervision;
  • The flexibility to work a varied schedule which will include days, evenings, overnights, and weekends;
  • The ability to work safely around, and with, power equipment, including tools and machinery;
  • An understanding and a respect of general Health & Safety practices, as well as the Meridian Centre’s H&S Policy.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative, not all-inclusive, of those that the Conversion Crew Member will encounter as they successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • There is not a set schedule for this department. Hours are casual and based on the number and type of events
  • The hours are varied and can include overnight, as well as day, evening, and weekend shifts
  • The employee is regularly required to walk for long periods of time
  • The employee is required to stand, lift and bend for periods of time
  • The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • This work requires utilizing tools and equipment that could cause physical injury if not handled and operated following safety practices and procedures
  • The employee is required to follow WHMIS practices and guidelines as well as provincial Health and Safety regulations at all times
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times where required
  • The employee must provide their own CSA approved steel toe safety shoes/boots, and they must be worn at all times during every shift
  • Employees must wear a CSA approved helmet when working on the ice surface (while the Meridian Centre has helmets on site, it is strongly recommended that the employee provide their own)
  • Work gloves must be worn at all times when handling floor boarding, and at all times where hand protection is deemed necessary
  • The employee must provide their own work gloves.
