Job Description

YMCA Membership Branch – Port Colborne

Hourly Rate: $17.13/hr plus YMCA membership benefits

Start date: Immediately

Part-time, Permanent             

Must be able to teach a minimum of 2 cardio or strength classes per week; mornings, evenings, weekends (flexibility required)

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Recreation, or related field is an asset
  • Certification in Group Fitness (Cardio and Strength) **
  • Certified to teach a variety of classes (including Aquafit)
  • Proven customer service skills
  • Minimum 1-year practical experience delivering Group Fitness Classes (Cardio or Strength)
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Able to lift 45 lbs. or greater
  • Flexibility: willingness to learn new skills and to alter shifts
  • Proven capacity to work as part of a team
  • Current standard first aid and CPR-(C) certification
  • A clear and satisfactory criminal reference check inclusive of the vulnerable sector search (CRC VSS)issued for the YMCA of Niagara

 

** note: Applicants with other recognized national group fitness certifications may challenge the YMCA Basic Theory and Group Fitness exams and complete a practical evaluation to receive equivalency.  A passing grade of 80% is required for all component as well as a minimum score of 2.8 on the practical evaluation.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide excellence in the quality of instruction of Group Fitness Classes offered to members.
  • Generate positive experiences for everyone that you meet through excellence in customer service and relationship building opportunities.
  • Create an environment that fosters open communication with members, staff, and volunteers.
  • Provide a safe environment that fosters a sense of fun and enthusiastic atmosphere.
  • Required to arrive to classes at least ten minutes before classes.
  • Arrive to class prepared to teach an appropriate fitness class that matches the class description, available equipment and participant needs.
  • Provide high and low options in order to have individuals at all levels participate in the class.
  • Set up/clean up any necessary equipment for the class.
  • Educate and motivate Group Fitness participants following YMCA Canada fitness principals.
  • Demonstrate and role model proper fitness form and technique.
  • Meet and maintain a YMCA Group Fitness instructor behaviour grid score of 2.8 or higher.
  • Promote YMCA Group Fitness programs to individuals who are not currently engaged in YMCA Group Fitness offerings.
  • Act as a positive YMCA ambassador in the branch and community.
  • Keep accurate Group Fitness participation statistics.
  • Maintain all required qualifications and participate in ongoing education opportunities.
  • Understand and support YMCA philanthropic initiatives.
  • Share appropriate information with class participants about other YMCA programs and services.
  • Monitor commitment to service excellence by role modelling and maintaining YMCA SAM 2.1 standards.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, an ability to adapt to situations as they arise, and support with class coverage when required.
  • Other duties as required.
