Full-Time Heavy Equipment Mechanic (2-3 Positions)

Job Description

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager as part of an interdependent team, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing routine maintenance and repairs on forklifts, shunt trucks, rail king and their engines. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic must be able to utilize diagnostic tools in order to identify underlying problems, and knowledge of the many parts of a forklift is essential to perform the work safely; this includes their electrical systems, brakes, hydraulics, cooling systems, and engines.  The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is a key member of the facility’s yard and production teams and will undertake activities associated with the continuous improvement of equipment.

Duties/Responsibilities/Procedures:

Essential Duties:

  • Maintain Taylor fork lift (diesel), Cat 966D and forklift Propane/diesel), Bobcat New Holland (diesel), Raymond fork lift, shunt truck(s) and rail king;
  • Acquiring practical knowledge about the many acts, regulations and standards, including safety, that apply to vehicle safety inspections, emissions tests, and the repair and replacement of defective parts of powered lift trucks;
  • Interpreting and applying information from service bulletins, manuals and parts catalogues, microfiche and computerized information systems so that repair is performed according to manufacturer’s specifications;
  • Visually inspecting and assessing system types, looking for defects, testing and analyzing vehicle performance and function;
  • Diagnosing, troubleshooting, servicing and repairing: batteries, starting & ignition systems, electric motors, engines and engine lubricating systems, electrical-electronically controlled systems, clutch systems, suspension systems, cooling systems, and various fuel delivery systems including diesel and natural gas;
  • Selecting and correctly using the right tool(s) to perform engine tune ups; repairing manual transmissions and components, as well as automatic and hydrostatic transmission systems and drive shafts, drive axles and differential assemblies;
  • Diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing manual and power steering systems and components as well as mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic braking systems and their components;
  • Maintaining, diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing lifting systems and their components, as well as tires, wheels and frame and cab systems/components;

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Verifying all repairs for effectiveness;
  • Conducting final inspections to ensure that work detailed on work order has been completed to meet customer need/company standards;
  • Preparing cost estimates, parts requisitions and work plans;
  • Communicating with customers or service managers about the scope of problems and cost of repairs;
  • Reading manuals and consulting with manufacturers re: component or system specifications;
  • Complete work orders and follow up on prevention maintenance reports;
  • Participate and communicate with all personnel throughout the facility;
  • Comply with all PPE requirements and ensure that external personnel on the site also comply;
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement and problem-solving initiative;
  • Adhere to and comply with all applicable company policies and procedures;
  • Create, execute and complete all work order tasks and details utilizing CMMS system.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Conferring with managers, supervisors and operators in order to report equipment malfunctions and resolve production problems;
  • Completion of pre use inspection of equipment to detect defects and wear;
  • Compliance to Environmental Health and safety standards and engagement with EHS program and duties as assigned;
  • Safe Operations of equipment, lifting devices, industrial vehicles including but not limited to: forklift, crane, shunt truck and utility gator;
  • Provide coaching and expertise to other members by sharing expertise and working as a team to meet common business objectives;
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities to drive efficiency and cost savings;
  • Participate in meetings and committees to communicate information and serve as a liaison with other departments and managers;
  • Provide documented report on completed work orders as required;
  • Using a variety of hand and power tools, and material handling equipment to perform duties;
  • Provide coaching and expertise to other members by sharing expertise and working as a team to meet common business objectives;
  • Other duties as assigned for which he/she has received required training, possesses qualifications and/or is considered competent.

Job Specifications:

Educational and Experience Requirements for this position:

  • Post-Secondary, Truck and Coach Technician – 310T;
  • Must have operator certification or equivalent work experience;
  • A minimum of 5 years related work experience operating sophisticated equipment and machinery in an industrial setting;
  • Advanced technical aptitude including but not limited to: computers, math, assembly and general manufacturing principles;
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours/shifts;
  • Demonstrated capability to work with heavy equipment;
  • Previous experience with pneumatic, mechanical, electrical and industrial applications;
  • Working knowledge of tools, materials, methods and practices used in equipment management, and repair;
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check in accordance with the company’s policy.

  • Willingness to be actively involved in problem-solving activities following effective and proven methodologies such as Root Cause Analysis;
  • Willingness to embrace new challenges.
