Seasonal Petting Zoo Attendant (1 Position)

Job Description

PURPOSE                          The purpose is to clearly define the job descriptions; duties and responsibilities of those working in the Petting Zoo Division.

 

POLICY                              Basic Function

 

To include; reporting to the Educational Consultant, General Manager and the Animal Care Manager.  This position is to ensure that visitors wishing to interact with small domestic animals do so in a safe manner.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Greet visitors to the petting zoo area, provide information about the animals and explain Safari Niagara’s rules for interacting with the animals. Except for the goats, visitors will not touch the other animal residents.
  • Goats will only be hand fed food pellets by visitors from outside the pen, through the feeding port. No other foods will be offered to the goats or any other animals.  Should a goat escape into the general park area the attendant will attempt to recover it and if this is not immediately possible will call for assistance from animal care.  Similarly, any problem with another animal will be dealt with by animal care.
  • Inspecting all pens to ensure that all is in order. Any problems will be reported immediately to the Animal Care Manager
  • The attendant is not responsible for feeding or initially providing water each day (that being the job of animal care personnel). The attendant will ensure that water bowls and buckets are kept filled during the day.
  • The pens will be kept clean and fecal matter and soiled bedding will be removed on a regular basis, placed in the containers provided and stored in the appropriate area for later removal.
  • The concrete floor of the petting zoo barn will be swept at the beginning of each day and if necessary during the day. The area around the petting zoo will be kept free of litter.  The attendant will store all tools and other materials in the storage area out of the reach of visitors.
  • Visitors who pet or feed the goats will be advised to wash their hands at the wash station before leaving the area. The attendant will check on the soap and paper towels at this station each morning.
  • The petting zoo barn will not be left unattended during breaks or lunch period. If a supervisor or other employee is not available to cover the area during these times the barn door will be closed while the attendant is absent.  A sign will be placed on the door to advise when an attendant will return.
  • The attendant will begin work when the park opens. The first half hour will be spent performing tasks as described above.  The petting zoo will open to the public one half hour after the park opens.  The attendant will work a 7 hour day with an additional half hour for lunch, 5 days a week.  The petting zoo will close when the attendant finishes his/her shift.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Be able to interact with park visitors in a friendly and cheerful manner;
  2. Be prepared to work out of doors and spend several hours on his/her feet;
  3. Possess a knowledge of the life cycle, characteristics, habits and requirements of each animal in the petting zoo;
  4. Be knowledgeable about the park in order to provide information to visitors;
  5. Be punctual and flexible in the hours of employment;
  6. Be diligent in the performance of the duties required to maintain the safety and cleanliness of the petting zoo;
  7. Take pride in his/her appearance and maintain the Safari Niagara uniform in good condition;
  8. Take a Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) workshop and pass the WHMIS written test.

 

The Petting Zoo Attendant should:

  • Have previous experience in working with small domestic animals;
  • Possess a driver’s license;
  • Be qualified in first aid and CPR;
