Position Summary

The Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic is responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all types of refrigeration and HVAC systems at the facility. S/he will process and complete work orders, troubleshoot mechanical failure, and advise on equipment upgrades as necessary.

Job Duties

  • Effectively install, repair, upgrade, and maintain facility refrigeration equipment, process refrigeration, HVAC units, and climate control systems
  • Work with refrigeration systems of all types including industrial equipment, HVAC systems, and domestic equipment using a variety of halocarbon, hydrocarbon, and other refrigerants.
  • Observe, troubleshoot, and test system operations, including related systems such as control and power wiring, relays, contactors, pressure sensors, pressure controls, temperature sensors, 4-20 sensors, and control PCB’s
  • Take direction from the Head of Facilities or designate on the ongoing priority of various tasks assigned
  • Keep records of all work done for future reference and for incorporation into the Company’s master computer aided design (“CAD”) files for the building. This includes detailed records of repairs and changes made, such as final setting, parts and consumables used.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and schematics
  • Provide detail of ongoing inventory requirements for commonly used items as stock is depleted
  • Work in accordance with all rules and regulations governing industrial establishments
  • Perform all tasks in accordance with any applicable the Company’s SOPs after obtaining the required training
  • Work with other trades and staff on the site in a cooperative manner
  • Maintain a positive and progressive team atmosphere across all departments
  • Maintain an organized, safe, and clean working environment, possessing an attitude of high standards of cleanliness
  • Assist in any task the Head of Facilities designates as an immediate priority to preserve the physical or environmental security of the building, contents, or staff
  • Attend any training session designated by the Company
  • Ensure compliance with safe work practices, Standard Operating Procedures and all applicable regulations
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with varied types of refrigeration equipment
  • Ontario College of Trades Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic designation
  • ODP certification
  • Proficient knowledge of rules and regulations governing industrial establishments, and applicable codes and standards
  • Advanced knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems
  • Experience working with complex systems such as systems containing multiple evaporators, EPR’s, CPR’s, AEV’s, receivers, solenoids, unloaders, hot gas bypass, desuperheaters, low ambient controls, and oil return systems
  • Competent use of hand tools, power tools, soldering, brazing and welding equipment
  • Gasfitter qualification is a strong asset
  • Other technical or industrial qualifications are strong assets
  • Working at heights and other training and certifications are an asset
  • Autocad experience is an asset
  • Good troubleshooting skills
  • Clean criminal record
  • G driver’s license and reliable vehicle. Reliable attendance is mandatory
  • Excellent workmanship skills and pride in not cutting corners is mandatory
  • Excellent workplace housekeeping is essential
  • Team worker able to co-exist with other tradespeople and staff and assist whenever able
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to work independently once given a task

Working Conditions

  • Shifts may be subject to business needs and you may be asked to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • PPE Required: PPE as required by the OHSA, or SOPs specific to the area or task
  • May be subject to working in extreme weather conditions as needed, outside or on roofs

Physical Requirements

  • Standing and walking for long periods of time
  • Frequent stooping, bending, kneeling and reaching
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining a high level of attention to detail
  • The ability to lift 20-40 pounds regularly
  • The ability to respond quickly to sounds
  • The ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in cramped spaces
  • The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations
  • The ability to safely climb stairs while carrying 20-40 pounds
