Tips to Remaining Organized throughout your job Search

By Rachel Morocco

Sometimes job searching can be a difficult and timely process that we go through. We search for jobs for multiple different reasons whether it be our first job and we want experience, we just need to work strictly to pay the bills and put food on the table, or we are working to build our career in a dream job.

Regardless of the reason, it can be hard to keep track of what we want or where we want to go. So where to start? Here are some tips below to get you organized and on the right path.

  1. Begin!
First step is pretty simple: ok. Just Start. Occasionally we use our lack of organization and lack of preparation for job searching as an excuse to keep pushing it back because we are comfortable. Job Searching and interviewing can be uncomfortable because it is new. It may become discouraging at times especially when we apply and do not hear back or if we get an interview but no job offer. There will always be a couple bumps in the road before we reach the end but keep going!
  2. Clear the Clutter!
Sit down at your desk, kitchen table, or wherever you do your best work. Make sure it’s a clean space, no clutter or chaos. Typically our surroundings reflect our mood. If we clean what’s around us and have no distractions then we are more willing to do what we have to do. That way your thoughts are organized and you can get to job searching for the perfect fit.
  3. Make time!
There will always be excuses that come up as to why you can’t do things. I recommend putting a certain amount of time each day into your schedule just solely dedicated to your job search, that way you’re optimizing your time and ensuring the time you are using is away from any distractions.
  4. Update & Tailor your Resume!
Make sure that you have an updated resume with all your recent jobs. Tailor the resume specifically for each job you’re applying to! If you do need further help in perfecting your resume – Give the Job Gym a call, someone is always here to offer you support making an amazing resume that will get you noticed!
  5. Narrow it Down!
Where is it you want to go? Where do you want to apply? What kind of work are you looking for? Those are the questions we need to be asking ourselves. We need to figure it out and talk about those organizations or companies we want to apply to and search for the job postings related to them. Do your research on these companies for the potential of you getting an interview, then you know lots of information about them to make an informed decision!
  6. Keep track!
Wherever you apply keep note of it, to make sure you aren’t applying twice or that you don’t miss a response back. It’s easy to get overwhelmed during the job searching process, that’s why keeping track helps you stay on top of things.
